A MAJOR boost to the Lanark economy is on the way with the announcement of the building of a 300 chalet holiday village near the town.

It will be on a 20 acre site, part of which is currently occupied by the Newhouse Caravan Park at Ravenstruther.

The existing site is to be cleared to give the developers “vacant possession” of the area with planning permissions and guarantees in place to create what will be virtually a new village, with extensive leisure facilities.

It is expected that scores of new jobs will be created.

The plan seems tailor-made to answer the calls made last month by Lanark Community Development Trust for the town’s future economy to be based in tourism.

The owner of the site for the past 12 years, Billy Barton, told the Gazette that last week’s granting of planning permission by South Lanarkshire Council to massively expand the Newhouse Park by 81 more static caravans had been the clincher in deciding to go ahead with a full-blown redevelopment of the site.

He said that he had guarantees that permission would be forthcoming for 280 chalets and permanent mobile homes to go on the site.
