Making a big cash splash

Youngsters from Giffnock will be making a splash for charity this weekend '“ and hoping to raise lots of cash.

They will be raising funds and awareness for people living with diabetes by swimming 22 miles – the length of the English Channel.

Leading the group are ten-year-old Jacob Kitson, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was six, and Joseph Hall (7), who has lived with the condition since he was four.

Both boys and their families are part of the Diabetes Scotland Glasgow Family Support Group.

Jacob’s mum, Vicki, secretary of the Glasgow group, said: “Jacob and his school friend Joseph wanted to do something to support people living with Type 1 diabetes. 
We found this idea from Diabetes UK and thought with help from a few friends it would be an exciting challenge.

“The support from friends has been fantastic and we are looking forward to completing the 22 miles as a group.”

Jacob’s team will be holding its grand finale this Sunday from 9am to noon at Neilston Pool.

There are currently almost 30,000 people in Scotland living with Type 1 diabetes, including 64000 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

It can develop at any age but usually appears before the age of 40, and especially in childhood.

Jane-Claire Judson, national director of Diabetes Scotland, said: “We are delighted Jacob, Joseph and friends are taking on the swim challenge to help other children and families who are affected by Type 1 diabetes.”
