Man who stabbed his brother is spared jail

A Motherwell man who stabbed his brother in front of their elderly mother has avoided a prison sentence.

Dominic Treanor (45) attacked 49-year-old Hugh at a house in Arran Road on July 5 last year.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that Hugh, who lives in England, had been staying with Treanor and their 81-year-old mother, Elissa.

Shortly before 1am the brothers got into an argument during which Treanor stabbed his brother on the forearm with a kitchen knife.

Mrs Treanor stemmed the flow of blood with a towel and called an ambulance.

The victim had the wound stitched and has been left with a scar.

Dominic Treanor, of Merryton Tower, Motherwell, admitted stabbing his brother to his injury and permanent disfigurement.

Defence agent Ian Scott blamed drink for what happened.

He told the court: “This is a first offender who has pleaded guilty at an early stage. Nonetheless, it’s a quite frightening case before the court.

“I see the strain of alcohol running through this family.”

Sheriff Thomas Millar ordered Treanor to be supervised for two years and to attend any alcohol counselling deemed appropriate.
