Meeting tonight on Clydesdale school bus cuts

PARENTS of pupils at Clydesdale’s four secondaries are meeting tonight (Tuesday) to hear council plans to cut the free school bus service.

South Lanarkshire Council wants to increase the distance which entitles mainstream pupils to free transport from the current policy of more than two miles from the school to more than three miles.

And that would mean parents would be responsible for getting their child to secondary school if they live up to three miles from the school.

The plan is out to consultation at the moment, and parents have until Wednesday, May 13 to make their views known.

In the consultation papers, the council states that its current policy is “more generous” than the provision set down in the Education (Scotland) Act, which stipulates that local authorities should provide free transport to pupils aged over eight who live more than three miles from school.

A public meeting will be held at Lanark Grammar School tonight from 6 until 8pm to allow parents and members of the community to hear about the proposal, ask questions and express their views.
