Memorial service for Far East servicemen

A MEMORIAL service is being held in Newmains to commemorate the sacrifice made by servicemen in the Far East during WWII.

The Lanarkshire Yeomanry Group is organising the service which will be held at the St Brigid’s Centre on Sunday, February 10.

The service was first staged last year and, because of the success of it, the Group took the decision to once again remember those who died at the hands of the Japanese.

Campbell Thomson, from the Lanarkshire Yeomanry Group, said: “The service will begin at 2pm and after a short introduction, we will show a film.

“Although a dramatization, it provides a graphic portrayal of what life was like as a POW in the Far East.

“Following the film there will be a short service of remembrance after which those attending can enjoy some hospitality and share common experiences and memories.

“The services now being organised give the families of the men an opportunity to meet and share common experiences.”
