Memory trek for cancer care

Gail Stabler (49) walked 10km for 50 days and has so far raised £1,255 to help cancer sufferers.

Her friend Sharon Fuller (53) passed away earlier this year after a four-year battle with the disease.

Gail told the Herald: “Sharon and I were friends for more than 20 years and I miss her terribly.

“I wanted to d o a challenge in her memory.”

Gail added: “Fitting a 10k walk in every day around a full-time workload wasn’t easy but it was nothing to the challenge Sharon faced after being diagnosed. She was and will remain a huge inspiration to me.”

Two charities will benefit from Gail’s fundraising efforts

She said: “Sharon lived in England and spent the last days of her life at St John’s Hospice in Bedfordshire.

“The hospice was fantastic. Sharon felt very safe and calm in their hands, and for that I am extremely grateful.”

Some of the money will go towards the Sue Ryder Foundation, a national charity which provides hospice support for cancer victims .

The remainder of the cash will be donated to an NHS cancer centre where Sharon 
received her treatment.

On Saturday, friends of family turned out to see Gail finish her big walk and husband Peter surprised her with a special medal. Gail added: “I intend to keep up my walking. I feel a million times better and have lost half a stone!”
