Men's Shed is coming to Forth

The feature in our April 6 edition on the Men's Shed movement rang more than a few bells with Clydesdale councillor Catherine McClymont - because she is already trying to set up Men's Sheds in this area.

Men’s Shed is one of the UK’s fastest growing groups, with 25 branches in Scotland and another 25 on the cards.

The Gazette feature looked at the groups in Cumbernauld and Hamilton, and interest has been shown in Motherwell and Carluke.

The Men’s Shed aims to improve the quality of life for men, and the founder of the Aberdeen group, the first in Scotland, compared it to the old days when men out of work or widowed had only the pub or betting shop as options.

After the feature appeared, Councillor McClymont wrote to the Gazette. Her letter is in this week’s paper, but if you missed it, here it is again and here is your chance to get involved:

“It just so happens I am currently working on trying to establish a Men’s Shed in two locations in my ward. I am keen to hear in the first instance any men who would be interested in joining us in Forth in the near future.

“We are looking for men aged over 40 who would either like to come and participate or would indeed be able to volunteer their skills to help others.

“The Men’s Shed is somewhere men can repair and make things, drop in for a chat, play cards or dominoes for instance, have a laugh whilst working on projects - making flies for fishing is something I believe is popular.

“To start with we will locate once a week at the poly tunnel Portacabin where you would also be able to help with growing and planting if that is what you are interested in.

“This seems to be something that is taking off over the UK and I thought along with members of the Forth Initiative Group, Healthy Valleys and Seniors Together that we could try it out.

“I have visited the Men’s Shed set up in Hamilton and it is working well for them.

“If you are interested please contact me on 07881 310570. – Yours, etc.,

Catherine McClymont
