Milngavie and Bearsden knitters asked to fashion grieving families gift from heart

Knitters in East Dunbartonshire are being asked to being asked to craft some heart-shaped woollies to help grieving families.

Margaret McGuire, Board Nurse Director of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “Due to the highly contagious nature of coronavirus, many families and carers have been unable to spend time with or see their loved ones before they die.

“We are looking at ways our nursing staff can support families. A small token may bring them some comfort and we are asking the knitting community in East Dunbartonshire and across Greater Glasgow and Clyde to knit us small hearts. The heart will be offered to families with another remaining with the deceased in the hope it will allow them to feel more connected to their relative who has recently died.”

Knitters are asked to use clean wool and once they are knitted to deliver the hearts in re-sealable plastic bags with the date clearly written on it – so staff can allow 72 hours before the hearts can be used.
