However, he has not been in touch with friends of family since and police are now urging anyone who has seen Mr Smith or his van to get in touch as soon as possible.

He is described as white, 5ft 9in tall, of slim build, balding with short grey hair and normally clean-shaven. He was wearing dark jogging bottoms, a maroon hooded top with white writing on the front and white trainers.

Inspector Martin Rutland said: “Bernard’s family are anxious to trace him and we are working hard to ensure he is found as quickly as possible.

“Officers are carrying out extensive inquiries and I’m urging anyone who can help with this ongoing effort to come forward.

“We know that Bernard had said he was intending to travel to Cumbernauld and there is a chance that he may be in this area, however we are keeping an open mind that he is still in the vicinity of Forth Valley.”

Those with relevant information are asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or speak to any officer.
