More than 15,000 people say no to New Lanark quarry

That is the claim being made this week by Save Our Landscapes, the pressure group combating the attempt by mining giant Cemex to extend its existing Hyndford Quarry on the fringes of Lanark down into the scenic ‘buffer zone’ at New Lanark.

Since the plan became known a year ago, SOL has been campaigning hard to block it, collecting signatures on a petition and encouraging individuals to write letters of objection to the council.

Now, with that vital decision due to be taken in October, the group is taking stock of its efforts, hoping that it has attracted enough support to its cause to sway South Lanarkshire Council.

A spokesman for SOL, opposing the quarrying on environmental grounds as well as the loss of some of our area’s finest scenery, said that over 15,000 people had now registered their opposition to the scheme.

He stressed that the geographic spread of that support meant that no-one should dismiss it as a ‘local’ issue for the Lanark area.
