Morrisons plan to open up shop in Cumbernauld

Morrisons have formally submitted a planning application to North Lanarkshire Council to open up a store in Westfield.

The supermarket chain previously held a public consultation last year to discuss their plans, as previously reported in the News and Chronicle.

They say the proposed store has the overwhelming support of local residents, who are particularly keen to see more shopping choice in the local area – with 99 per cent of respondents expressing their wish to see increased variety.

It is hoped that planning consent can be secured later this year, with work starting on building the new store beginning next year.

Morrisons say they will recruit locally, and work with the council and agencies such as Job Centre Plus to acquire new staff.

Richard Bakes, who is development executive for Morrisons, said: “Morrisons is dedicated to growth in Scotland and our ambitious plans for Cumbernauld will benefit the local area in a number of ways.

“The site will provide new, local jobs and enhanced choice for shoppers, whilst we also hope the development will act as a catalyst for further regeneration.”

Gleniffer Estates, in partnership with Walker Group, has agreed to sell the seven acre site at Westfield, adjacent to Broadwood Stadium.

Bryan Wilson, managing director of Gleniffer Estates, said, “Westfield is a terrific location for this store and will greatly enhance local amenities serving an extensive residential community, bringing a vibrancy to the area, not to mention new employment opportunities.”
