Fiona said: “It was a pleasure to help the young people of Afasic to celebrate their group’s first birthday, we laughed while we played pool and ate cake, and it was clear they all loved attending the youth club. The sheer joy at spending time with like-minded people without the pressure of having to explain your individual speech, language or communication needs – they know, they accept and they have fun together. I know Afasic will grow from strength to strength and I wish them well.”

The club is based in Bearsden, at the Scout hall off Drymen Road and runs from 6-8pm.

It caters for young people in East Dunbartonshire aged 11-16 with a range of speech, language and communication needs. For many of these young people the youth club is the only opportunity to socialise with their peers and to make friends. Young people with SLCN find it very difficult to interact with others due to their limited communication and range of vulnerabilities.

The club offers a wide range of activities - from arts and crafts through to specific skills and confidence building. Outside trips are a regular feature which allow young people to be able to take part in what many of their peers take for granted; supported by well trained staff and volunteers within safe and fun environments. Some of the recent outings include tubing at the local ski club, bowling and recently the country’s largest trampolining arena at Airspace.
