Cumbernauld’s Scottish Parliament representative has pressed Scottish Water following a series of water outages affecting large areas of the town.

Jamie Hepburn MSP is also highly critical of Scottish Water’s response to the most recent failure, in establishing just one water distribution point at Wardpark, which is difficult to access for those without cars.

Mr Hepburn said: “I have been in touch with Scottish Water today and continue to press the urgency of the need to restore the water supply to the area as soon as possible. Although my focus at the moment is to ensure that every step is being taken to reconnect the supply to the affected households I will also be pursuing with Scottish Water the issue of supply to the Cumbernauld area, and response to connections.”

Today’s service failure has had widespread effects. Forest Road in Abronhill, situated near the location of the burst main, has been flooded. Rail services between Cumbernauld and Falkirk Grahamston have seen delays due to flooding on the line. Several Cumbernauld Town Centre businesses were closed, as were Cumbernauld Central and Abronhill Libraries.

“A number of constituents have been in touch with me today to pass on the view that this is just the latest in a series of water issues in Cumbernauld recently and these are concerns that I will be passing on to Scottish Water.

“I am also concerned that the only water distribution point set up by Scottish Water in Cumbernauld to distribute bottled water was in an industrial estate in Wardpark, which I believe is unacceptable given the issues in reaching this area for those without cars, I will be asking Scottish Water to consider the way they distrubute water in Cumbernauld and other towns in future.”
