Neighbours team up for the Games

The four-strong squad, who all live in Laurel Avenue, Lenzie, were chosen from the 50,000 who applied from all over the UK for 15,0000 coveted volunteer roles.

Gill Sinclair is taking annual leave from her day job as a fundraising officer for Donaldson’s School for deaf children in Linlithgow, to form part of the Venue Communication Team.

She is based at the National Hockey Centre on Glasgow Green and on hand to contact the emergency services if any incidents occur.

Gill said: “We are all very proud and delighted to have been picked.

“I will never have this opportunity to participate in the Games again and I am really looking forward to the challenge.

“It will be such a different role from my day job.”

Muriel Bone, a retired geography teacher, is a member of the spectator services team based at Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre.

She said: “There are eight gold medals to be won in the bowling.

“My role is to help spectators to have a safe and enjoyable time at the venue. This includes scanning tickets, helping spectators to find their seats, answering questions and assisting people to sort out any problems such as directing them to the first aid point.

Sheena Boyd, a retired chiropodist at Stobhill Hospital, will be in the driving seat at the Games, as a chauffeur for VIP guests.

She is one of a select few chosen to ferry dignitaries to sporting events and venues - known as a T1 driver.

The fourth volunteer in the Laurel Avenue squad is Brian Fraser, who used to work in the leisure industry.

He is also taking on the role as a driver at the Games and will be responsible for ferrying around members of the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Commonwealth Games Association.

Minister for the Commonwealth Games, Shona Robison, said: “Volunteers will be the life blood of the Games.”
