New award in memory of Father Joe Brannigan

FATHER Joseph Brannigan, the priest at St Mary’s Church in Lanark, died suddenly in January - but now his name will live on and encourage youngsters to learn about their faith.

Catholic education was a subject very dear to Father Joe’s heart.

And now the Gazette can reveal that an award will be made annually at St Mary’s Primary School for the pupil showing the greatest understanding of their faith.

His family have been deeply touched by this move and have sponsored the memorial.

The glass trophy was presented to the school this week by the Parent Council.

“The Parent Council of St. Mary’s Primary School wanted to create a lasting and fitting tribute to his memory,” explained Rosie Ferguson, who chairs the council.

“Following consultation with parents, staff, pupils and Father Brannigan’s family it was decided to create an annual award for Excellence in Catholic Education.”
