New drug warning

A public warning about ecstasy-like tablets called Superman has been issued.

These pink coloured pills have an S logo on one side and a line dividing the tablet in two on the reverse, along with a letter R in a circle.

Tablets recovered by police were found to contain the chemical methoxyamphetamine (PMA), which can cause adverse reactions as well as death — effects also include nausea and vomiting, hypothermia and hallucinations.

Following the recent death of Regane Maccoll, police issued a warning about deadly red tablets Mortal Kombat.

As a result of the 17-year-old’s death after a night at The Arches, the arts venue has also implemented an over-21 policy.

A spokesman for the nightclub said: “The Arches has been working closely with Police Scotland to review our policies and do even more to ensure a safer clubbing environment within the venue.

“All club events will be open to over 21s only and valid ID will be required for entry.

“The Arches operates a zero tolerance drugs policy and is committed to protecting the customers’ health and safety, whom we urge to act responsibly at all times.”

Police are asking anyone with information about distribution or the manufacture of illegal tablets to contact non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Detective inspector Sharon MacGregor said:“Illicit drugs are unstable, unpredictable and extremely dangerous as this outcome shows. Often the content of the drugs is unknown but they could contain dangerous chemicals and people need to understand the devastating effect they can have.”

Enquiries are ongoing in relation to Regane’s death and a report will be submitted to the licensing committee in due course.

Meanwhile, more then 1,150 people have signed an online petition protesting against The Arches new age limit.
