New Hydro arena proves draw for opening night

AN opening night at the new Hydro arena featuring 70s rocker Rod Stewart drew crowds of 13,000 people to the Clyde side this week.

The colourful building welcomed visitors with a light show, as its facade was lit up in blue and green.

Doors opened on Monday, and bosses at the newly-built venue are aiming to have one million people attend music, sport and comedy events each year — setting up comparisons with the likes of the 02 in London and New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Chief executive officer John Sharkey said: “It’s great to see The SSE Hydro open its doors — it’s a phenomenal building which lit up the Glasgow skyline.”
