New play park is fun-tastic

Children in Milngavie have a great new reason to pull on their welly boots and coats and face the gloomy winter weather.

They will be thrilled when they see the transformation that’s taken place in Campsie Drive play park - thanks to a £41,000 cash injection from East Dunbartonshire Council.

The impressive new facility, which was officially launched by Councillor Ashay Ghai, was upgraded as part of the council’s 10-year Capital Play Programme in line with the council’s Open Space Strategy.

One hundred households nearby were consulted on the design of the play park and voted for their favourite. The winning design was constructed over the last few months.

Councillor Ashay Ghai, depute leader of the council and convener of neighbourhood services, said: “This is nothing short of a transformation. Before, there were a few swings and a climbing frame.

“Now it’s a modern, well-equipped play park which I am sure is going to be a much-welcomed amenity for local children and families.

“I hope it brings smiles to lots of faces for many years to come.”

New equipment includes separate toddler and child climbing units with slides, a wide range of swings for toddlers, young children and individuals with limited mobility, a double zig-zag twister and comet roundabout for spinning, and a camel springie.

However, while Milngavie SNP councillor Jim Gibbons is pleased with the upgrade he is concerned that some Lynn Drive residents say they were not consulted about the options available for improvements.

He said: “Although there are no direct links to the park from Lynn Drive, it is the main play park in the area and parents and children should be encouraged to walk for a few hundred metres to get there.”
