The new management plan should also see more specific guidelines to protect the surroundings – the buffer zone – of the village, which is a World Heritage Site.

“It is a broad view of how important it is to safeguard the World Heritage Site, not just for its intrinsic historic and cultural interest but because it can be a tremendous economic benefit to Clydesdale and the wider South Lanarkshire community,” said New Lanark Trust Director Lorna Davidson.

There is currently concern about a quarrying plan near the site’s buffer zone, which the plan did not specifically mention. However, it was stressed the document would be used in future to assess risks to the World Heritage Site.
