Newton Mearns boy stars in BBC’s Stonemouth

The 15-year-old, from Newton Mearns, has been acting since he was five, and is part of Glasgow South Stagecoach.

Ewan is no stranger to The Extra either, having appeared in the paper aged 11, after his part in big screen chiller The Awakening, alongside Rebecca Hall and Imelda Staunton.

And, following on from professional roles on the Glasgow King’s and Theatre Royal stages, the young star will now appear in a BBC adaptation of Iain Banks’ Stonemouth, playing the young Callum Murston — with the older version played by Coronation Street and Waterloo Road actor Samuel Robertson.

Ewan told The Extra: “I’m so excited to be part of this exciting production. It has a wonderful storyline, and I got the opportunity to play a really complex character. I also got to work with a really nice set of boys who I’ve kept in touch with. It’s so nice to be back on television after my last film.”

Proud mum Lyn Walker sent in a picture of Ewan with his older self (in TV terms at least), and commented: “Samuel was really eager to see who was playing his younger self, and was so surprised when he saw how alike they both were.”

Ewan added: “The best bit about being on set was having my own trailer — great to chill out, study my lines and then go back out on location.

“The other boys and the main cast made me so welcome, and we really became a close team.”

The two-part drama, based on the work of the late Scottish author, is set in a fictional Aberdeenshire village.

The focus is on character Stewart Gilmour, who returns to the village for his best friend’s funeral, having been run out of town a year earlier by his girlfriend’s family.

But in order to uncover the truth behind his friend’s apparent suicude, Stewart must face his up to his own past...
