Newton Mearns church marks a milestone year

The origins of the church date back to 1739, when worshippers from Mearns, Eaglesham and Neilston came together to build a church especially for Newton Mearns — the current building is the second church to occupy the site.

Graeme Dunn, finance convener at the church, told The Extra: “Occupying the prime location at the cross where the roads from the north, south, east and west met, the building of the new church attracted great interest in the community.

“It was opened and formally dedicated on December 16, 1939. When the Second World War broke out, the old hall was designated as a rest centre for anyone needing shelter, and after the bombing of Clydebank in 1941, some of the survivors were accomodated.”

Fast forward to 2014, and Newton Mearns Church remains a focal point for community groups including the Boys Brigade and Girl Guides, the Guild and the choir.

The church has been fundraising throughout its anniversary year, starting with Carols at the Cross in December and including a Burns Supper and summer outing to Culzean Castle.

Graeme added: “The Kids @ the Cross junior church chose Mary’s Meals as the focus for fundraising in the anniversary year, and all the income from the functions and coffee mornings on the first Saturday of each month will go to the charity.”
