Not above the law?

A PHOTOGRAPH doing the rounds on social media shows two police cars parked behind the ‘no-entry’ sign at Lanark bus stance, and four officers apparently in the queue for ice cream at Valerio’s.

The bus stance is for use only by buses and coaches, a restriction enforced strictly since a fatal accident in July 2012, when a pedestrian was hit by a taxi.

That led to a campaign and a change in by-laws in December 2013 to ensure other vehicles were not using it.

For the police today (Friday) Area Commander Chief Inspector David Walker said: “We are currently carrying out enquiries into this matter.

“It has been made absolutely clear to officers that they are not above the law and although we are an emergency service, in anything other than exceptional circumstances we are required to comply with the same road traffic restrictions as any other road user.

“Where officers fail to comply with this instruction and are found to have fallen short of the standards expected of them, action will be taken.”
