Now cans canbe canned in5000 places

The headquarters of Cumbernauld soft drinks kingpin A G Barr was the natural place to celebrate a Scottish eco-milestone.

The giant of ginger has played a lead role in the bid to create new recycling opportunities – and there are now more than 5,000 new recycling points set up across 1,000 workplaces.

The figure was revealed as a free to use service reached the magic thousand number six months ahead of target.

The Every Can Counts scheme aims to drive up recycling rates and help Scottish businesses meet the Waste (Scotland) Regulations, which came into effect in 2014, requiring all Scottish businesses to separate recyclable materials.

Collection points have also been set up at locations where people drink cans ‘on the go’ including transport hubs and shopping centres.

These include 32 can crushers installed in schools, colleges and universities.

Deborah Jones, Barr’s corporate affairs chief, said: “This is a fantastic milestone.

“The scheme is a great example of how we can work to encourage everyone to dispose of products and packaging responsibly and to recycle more.”
