As reported then, a confidential report from the receivers of the defunct Scottish Coal operators warned that money was running out to properly maintain the pits closed down with the firm’s collapse last year; the two local pits involved are Mainshill amnd Glentaggart.

The report highlighted worries of parts of the Mainshill pit flooding into the surrounding countryside while there was more vague concern about “a growing risk of an incident” at Glentaggart.
