g Claims are being made that South Lanarkshire Council planning officials are to recommend next month that the Owenstown scheme be refused planning permission on the grounds that it does not fit in with council development policy.

The Gazette had previously heard speculation that some in the council had wanted the new town of 8000 inhabitants with new industries to be built closer to central Lanarkshire rather than the rural site near Rigside which has been earmarked.

The news has sparked off a spirited defence of the scheme and its location.
