Paragolfer passes test with flying colours at Williamwood

Golfers turned out to support a fundraising event to buy a special piece of kit which makes the game accessible to wheelchair users.

The golfers helped to raise more than £7,000 towards buying a second Paragolfer for Mearns Castle Golf Club — around £25,000 new.

A spokesman said: “Williamwood was a great test with its steep slopes, hidden tee areas and water hazards, but the Paragolfer was able to cope with all of them.

“At Mearns Castle Golf Academy we have raised over £1,000 so far towards purchasing a second machine.

“We need another £5,000 to reach our target, so we are hosting another event in August.”

Meanwhile, almost 70 golfers took to the fairway at Mearns Castle Golf Club recently to tee up for charity, in support of the Beatson.

The main item up for bids was for golfer John Duncanson taking three people out with him at Gleneagles, which went under the gavel for £400, bid by Mearns Castle member John Cant.

The auction grand total came to £900.

Maureen Thompson, from the Beatson board, said a few words on the charity’s behalf and then the prizes were distributed. In the golf challenge, Gerry Gallagher finished runner-up with a respectable score of 42 points.

A round of golf with Scott Jamieson was the main prize in the raffle, which raised £945 altogether.
