Park and go without parting with cash

Motorists in Glasgow will now be able to use their phone to pay for on-street parking.

Cashless parking is being rolled out across the city centre this week and, according to a Glasgow City Council spokeswoman, will reach the southside by the end of June.

Drivers will now use RinGo to charge their parking fees direct to their credit or debit card via their mobile — which means they can also top up their time on the metre without returning to their car.

Glasgow joins 225 towns and cities across the UK and 95 local authorities offering the system as an alternative to pay and display. Councillor Alistair Watson, executive member for sustainability and transport, said: “This is great news for drivers in Glasgow.

“The new system offers a quick and easy way to pay for parking. It’s fast, straightforward and convenient and I’m sure this cashless parking service will be welcomed by everyone who regularly parks in the city.

“It will also reduce the number of parking machines in the city. We have more than 1,000 pay and display machines and as part of this programme we’ll see that number fall, as well as associated costs.”
