Parking wardens drive home the road safety message

Council chiefs say drivers are starting to learn their lesson as new community wardens continue to issue parking tickets.

The wardens are expected to issue their 1,000th fine later this month - with a total of 735 tickets dished out so far in the first seven weeks of the scheme.

More still have to be recruited, but council leader Rhondda Geekie said the current team of law-enforcers are successfully getting the message across to car owners looking for a parking space.

Councillor Geekie said: “I want to pay tribute to the community wardens for their endeavour, dedication and determination.

“I also want to highlight the hard work carried out by officers behind the scenes - both in the run-up to the introduction of DPE and now that it has gone live.”

She added: “Wardens have issued 735 fixed penalty notices in the first seven weeks, but more importantly Decriminalised Parking Enforcement is having a positive impact on parking behaviours in and around our town centres.

“DPE has helped to reduce inconsiderate and dangerous parking, and improve safety for all road users. It has also improved access to town centre areas.

“We need parking management and education to manage our road network, maintain safety for all users and support the economic vitality of East Dunbartonshire town centres through increased turnover.”
