Party marks 120th year for Craigholme

A birthday barbecue was on the menu for parents, pupils and staff of Craigholme School last week.

Around 200 people gathered to celebrate the Pollokshields school’s 120th anniversary at its sports complex in Pollok Park.

There, guests were treated to live entertainment, food, facepainting and a bouncy castle, as new principal Brendan Farrelly reminded them of Craigholme’s early days, led by founder Mrs Murdoch.

Mr Farrelly read from the original prospectus: “The aim of the school will be not only to impart the necessary instruction, but to develop the pupils physically, intellectually, morally and spiritually and to form habits of order, neatness and thoroughness, as well as of propriety of speech and manner.”

The principal told The Extra: “The school was renamed Craigholme School some time after the First World War.

“There have been many changes over the school’s 120 year history, discipline being one.

“Some pupils in Mrs Murdoch’s time had broken branches on a tree so had to report to the principal every morning for a week where she tied a large branch to one leg of each culprit so they could not sit down, much to the hilarity of their school mates.”

He continued: “There have been seven principals before me and all have left their mark on the school. We are all very proud to have reached 120 years in the history of the school and I was delighted so many people turned out to celebrate this wonderful milestone.”
