Peace garden grant approved

The Cumbernauld Peace Memorial Garden has been awarded a crucial £15,000 grant, which will underpin the cost of creating pathways in and around the site.

As reported previously in the News the ambitious community project, on land beside Greenfaulds Bowling Club , will commemorate all those from Cumbernauld who have been killed in action in conflicts from 1914 onwards.

Numerous local organisations and individuals have clubbed together to work on the site. While its final form may take time to develop, it is planned to have an open day on Sunday, August 3. It is expected that the majority of the work on the memorial garden will be completed a week before this.

At that time, national attention will be drawn towards the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War - which was a key driver behind the plan to create the garden.

The aim is for it to serve less as a memorial for specific individuals or as a conventional war memorial and more as a place for quiet contemplation.

The former Greenfaulds Orchard was the preferred site for this project, with its various assets including good accessibility, an existing car park and a south-facing environment.

The plans were developed following public meetings and discussions with stakeholders including local government representatives.
