Pedal power marathon for inspirational young Patrick

A 10-year-old who inspired his friends to get on their bikes cycled 110 miles between Glasgow and Edinburgh in his latest challenge.

Ten-year-old Patrick Kiehlmann was one of 800 people who took part in the Pedal for Scotland Sportif.

Patrick has completed the Pedal for Scotland Challenge ride (50 miles) for the past five years, starting when he was just five-years-old.

This year he asked his dad if he could step up to the Sportif, inspired by Olympian’s like Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Bradley Wiggins and this year’s Tour de France winner Chris Froome.

Patrick’s sister Beatrix (8) and brotherJames (6) took part in the 50-mile ride.

Patrick, a pupil at St Matthew’s Primary in Bishopbriggs, initially inspired his class mates to get on their bikes when he first completed the Challenge ride, and with the support of the head teacher and a grant, a local Family Cycling Club was established.

A year later around a dozen local parents set up East Dunbartonshire’s Cycle Co-operative, a community social enterprise to support more children and adults taking up cycling.

Since then Bishopbriggs has seen a huge rise in the number of children cycling to school.

Patrick said: “I love riding my bike to school every day.”
