The Bonfire Night celebrations at Glasgow Green have long been a major event in the local calendar, with thousands of people turning out to see them.

Despite its popularity, it has now been more than two years since it hosted the event - mostly due to the impact of Covid-19.

However, with the world now getting back to normal, you might expect that the Bonfire Night event would be returning. But that is not the case.

A number of councils across the UK have cancelled their own Bonfire Night celebrations in a bid to cut costs, but no such explanation has been given for why Glasgow Green is not hosting the event.

We asked Glasgow Life, the council’s arm’s-length culture and sport organisation, why the Bonfire Night event would not be held at Glasgow Green this year.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Life said: “There is loads to see and do in Glasgow all year round, especially in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

“We’re focused on welcoming people to enjoy the wonderful entertainment, nightlife and brilliant restaurants, bars, shops and hotels the city offers which support jobs and the visitor economy.”
