Building collapses after major fire in Pollokshields

Emergency services were called to tackle a blaze within a building in Albert Drive in Pollokshields at around 11.30pm last night (Sunday).

A total of nine fire appliances and two height appliances attended the scene.

It is thought to have started in the ground floor minimarket and greengrocer Strawberry Garden before affecting a number of flats above.

Residents were evacuated from their homes, which sit above the takeaway, and one man has been taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Crews worked through the night to surround and contained the fire which caused a partial collapse of the building.

Firefighters are now involved in an extensive dampening down operation which is expected to last throughout today (Monday, November 11).

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were alerted at 11.31pm on Sunday November 10 to reports of a fire within a building.

“Operations Control mobilised nine appliances and two height appliances to Albert Drive in the Pollokshields area.

“Crews are working to contain the fire that has taken hold within a commercial premises below flats.”

Road closures are currently in place in and around Albert Drive and are expected to be in place for several hours.
