Help bring Christmas joy to kids

Bishopbriggs-based Babes in The Wood has launched their re-vamped, annual Christmas appeal, providing free toys and presents for children all over East Dunbartonshire.

The eco-friendly social enterprise, which aims to reduce child poverty through the sustainable re-use of children’s toys, clothing and equipment, is currently launching their 6th annual call for Christmas donations.

Due to the pandemic, the organisation has created an Amazon wish list, allowing people to donate toys and items online for the shop to distribute to those in need. Their flagship store in Bishopbriggs is also accepting in-shop donations too for those unable to donate online.

The donation drive has been backed by Rona Mackay MSP. The Strathkelvin and Bearsden MSP visited the store last week to spread the early Christmas spirit and help ensure children throughout the community have as magical a Christmas as possible, despite coronavirus.

Ms Mackay said: “Now more than ever, we need our community to come together and provide for those who need it most.

“Babes in The Wood continue to be absolute stalwarts in providing for children throughout East Dunbartonshire in their hour of need. Their annual Christmas donation drive, which has been revamped to adapt to COVID-19 restrictions, is a prime way to ensure children throughout Strathkelvin and Bearsden can still have as magical a Christmas as possible.

“The pandemic is the greatest challenge our generation has faced. To see Babes in The Wood as determined as ever to provide for our community is awe-inspiring.

“As usual, my team and I will be making our regular Christmas donation to the organisation. I would encourage everyone who is in a position to donate to consider doing so, ensuring children in our community can have the Christmas they really deserve.

Babes in The Wood founder Heather Royan said: “We were thrilled to welcome Rona, who visited us last week to witness first hand, the generosity of East Dunbartonshire residents who never fail to respond when we ask for help.

“This year we are seeing more demand than ever before & appeal to those who would like to contribute, to do so as soon as possible.

“The last date we can accept donations is Nov 30 to allow time for us to pull the bundles together and get them out via our community partners to reassure families their children won’t go without.”
