Milngavie teenager on the run in memory of talented ex-Rangers trial youngster Robbie

Talented young footballer Robbie Readie (15), who was trialled for Rangers FC youth squads, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in July 2018.

He became only the sixth person in the UK to undergo a complex operation which saw his leg amputated and his foot turned into a new knee.

Brave Robbie completed his final round of chemotherapy in August last year but sadly the cancer returned two months later and he passed away in April.

Emma (17), who was at Douglas Academy with Robbie, decided to do a sponsored run in memory of her close friend.

She has smashed her fundraising target of £500 for Hamish Dear’s Warm Hugs and #TeamRobbie – so far raising more than £1,600.

Hamish Dear’s Warm Hugs, named after toddler Hamish Dear who passed away from Neuroblastoma cancer in 2015, provides financial assistance to children who have a cancer diagnosis and are being treated in hospital in Scotland.

The charity funds day trips, short breaks and provides gifts.

Emma posted on her justgiving page: “Robbie was truly an inspiration to everyone around him.

“Despite the troubles he was facing every single day, he had a smile on his face and made sure everyone around him had an even bigger smile.

“I am truly grateful to have had the time I had with Robbie and I will cherish those moments with him for the rest of my life.

“He truly had a heart of gold and was the most selfless person I have ever met.

“He was always putting others before himself to make sure we were all okay no matter how he felt.”

Her proud brother Gregor added: “Due to Covid-19, there were limited options for fundraising and Emma took it upon herself to undertake a sponsored run,

“She ran one mile every hour, for 14 hours (starting at 8am and finishing at 9pm) to raise funds for this great cause.

“The charity Hamish Dear’s Warm Hugs made a huge difference in Robbie’s life during the time he has left and Emma would like to give back to say thank you.”
