New £14m community hub - with cafe, library and gym - to be created in East End

The ground has been cleared to make way for the new £14 million Baillieston hub – which could be the best facility of its kind in the East End.

It is set to boast a cafe, library, gym, softplay, clip and climb , fitness studios outdoor games area and football pitch.

Baillieston Community Council chair Stephen Love said a previous sports centre in the area burnt down – ripping the heart from the community.

He said: “We have had nothing for so long. This will change so many people’s lives. There is no groups or anything to go to. This is desperately needed.”

The building plans would see it built in James Lindsay Park and site clearance work has taken place to make way for it.

SNP council candidate Alex Kerr said the features of the hub would surpass other facilities in the East End.

He said: “I can’t think of anything that comes close to this in the East End. The community have waited 15 years so it is the least they deserve. It is more than just a sports centre. It is also a community hub.”

He praised SNP Councillor Elaine Ballantyne for her efforts in fighting to make the Baillieston community hub a reality.

Councillor Ballantyne said: “I made it my number one priority when I got elected in 2017. We made more progress in the last five years than took place in the previous 10. It is big news for Baillieston. The whole of the Baillieston ward will benefit.”

Consultation has taken place on the plan.
