Southside flats given the green light

Dundas Estates and Development Co Ltd has been granted permission from Glasgow City Council to build on the former Walker Woodstock Timber Yard site at Barrland Street and Albert Drive.

The six-storey development will take a “sympathetic” approach to the local area “in terms of density and scale”, a planning report states.

“The development should contribute to the regeneration of Glasgow through the provision of attractive, energy efficient and sustainable housing that will have a positive impact on the quality of life of residents and prove attractive to purchasers.”

It will be made up of primarily two-bed flats, with some three-bed properties included. There will be 72 private parking spaces.

“The applicant identified a preferred housing mix based on the need for smaller housing units through analysis of market conditions specific to the locality,” the report adds.

“The applicant required that the development should be provided with sufficient private and secure storage for cycles and car parking to meet market expectations and policy requirements.”

Opposite the site on the southern side of Albert Drive is “a dense cluster of cultural and religious buildings”, this grouping “has buildings of local, city wide, and national significance”.

These are the Guru Granth Sahib Gurdwara Sikh Temple, St Ninians Church, the Tramway Arts Centre, the Hidden Gardens, and the Scottish Ballet School.

A previous application, in April 2017, had been refused by the council.

An application has also been submitted, by VKM Residential Ltd, to use a 28 flat residential block at 105 Barrland Street as short stay, serviced residential apartments.
