Plan to sort out Pollokshields

April will be a month of action, with local people, Glasgow city council, police and community wardens coming together to tackle major issues blighting the southside community.

Pollokshields councillor David Meikle told The Extra: “I was delighted to hear that the council and other agencies were planning a month of action in Pollokshields to tackle the problems of fly-tipping and litter.

“The various organisations have already worked positively together to produce an action plan and devote resources to the area with some success.

“However, the fact that there will be intense activity every day in April is very welcome and will be appreciated by the community.”

Last year, Glasgow city council figures showed Pollokshields was the worst ­community in Glasgow for fly-tipping, with more than 100 reports per month — double the Glasgow average.

A report will produced at the end of the month to outline the achievements made and further action planned.

There will be activity from the agencies involved every day in April.

Among the plans this month, problem streets in the area will be targeted for deep cleaning while extra patrols — including plain clothes officers — will be out on force to bring a halt to litter and fly-tipping.

Community Safety Glasgow is set to organise a clean-up day with the community, while road inspections are also set to take place.
