Detective Constable Stephen Cooke, Kirkintilloch CID, said: “We are checking CCTV and making enquiries with nearby neighbours re this attack.

“It is so irresponsible for people to fire air rifles at random never mind at a person. It’s just stupid and could be extremely dangerous. This time the pellet struck the man in the leg which is serious enough but imagine what could have happened if was in his head or face for example.

“I would appeal to anyone who knows who the shooter is or has any information that will help our enquiries to contact police via 101.”

Details can also be given in confidence to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
