Police officer dies after collapsing on duty

A police officer has died after collapsing while on duty in Newhouse.

The 55-year-old, named locally as Dougie Wiggins from Muirhouse, was attending an emergency call out at the Travel Inn on Edinburgh Road on Monday night when he took ill.

He was rushed to Wishaw General, but sadly passed away.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “At 11.40pm on Monday, May 2, whilst attending an emergency call at the Travel Inn on Edinburgh Road, a 55-year-old serving police officer took unwell and collapsed.

“He was taken to Wishaw General Hospital where he sadly died a short time later.

“There are no suspicious circumstances.”
