Former Celtic star could be sold for 'absurd' figure as transfer exit not ruled out by reluctant chief

Ex Manchester City and Leicester City striker left Celtic Park only six months ago

In-form ex Celtic striker Kelechi Iheanacho could be leaving Bursaspor in January if an ‘absurd’ offer is tabled, according to Club President Enes Celik.

Since leaving Celtic without a club in June, the striker was snapped up by the Turkish second tier side - and has been on fire ever since. Iheanacho’s 16 goals in 12 games have now reportedly attracted interest from European giants Fenerbahce.

The 30-year old was also in fine form for the Hoops last season when fit, and was renowned for scoring some vitally important goals, including his memorable 99th minute penalty against Motherwell to keep them in the title race. But after helping them secure the domestic double and admitting he’d have liked to have stayed at the club beyond the expiration of his contract, Hoops chiefs decided against offering him a new deal.

Iheanacho could be sold if ‘absurd’ fee met

The decision not to re-sign the 30-year now threatens to backfire on Celtic, given that Fenerbahce possess huge financial muscle. When asked whether Iheanacho is up for sale or not, Bursaspor President Celik wasn’t willing to rule it out. He told Bursa Hayat: "Iheanacho is a player who scores goals when there's no scoring opportunity.

“I want him to stay with the team more than anyone. But there might be some absurd figures involved. If there are, we, as the management, will evaluate them. Ultimately, we set out to do what's right for the club. We tried to make grounded, rational decisions. In that respect, the right offer, or rather, an offer far beyond the right one…

“He's not a player who will easily leave us. Meanwhile, he also wants to bring a lot of money to the club. He's a really good character. It wouldn't be right to give a specific figure, but if it's a figure that satisfies everyone, you can be sure it will be a figure that will make people say, 'He'll be sold for this amount.'"

Why did Iheanacho want to stay at Celtic?

After securing the double, Iheanacho himself claimed he was hoping to stay in Glasgow. He said: "I love the supporters, I love them all. Everyone in the streets of Glasgow, people recognise me. I am happy. The whole of Glasgow is a great city. Hopefully, I will be here next season. I am really happy to wear a Celtic shirt and to play for them with all my heart."

Despite his pleads, the club’s hierarchy opted against a new deal and instead acquired attacking reinforcements from elsewhere. In July, front men Camilo Duran and Kasper Hogh were signed for a combined total of £17m, while 19-year-old Chelsea marksman Shim Mheuka was enlisted on a season-long loan on deadline day.
