Politicians demand delivery on service in Kilsyth

The News and Chronicle reported last week that the delivery office, situated on 90 Main Street, is currently under review and Royal Mail confirmed that the operation could move to share facilities with either Kirkintilloch or Cumbernauld. Royal Mail, however, insist that no formal decision will be made until a consultation has taken place with their staff and trade unions. The organisation also confirmed that they do not anticipate any jobs will be lost.

Both MP Gregg McClymont and MSP Jamie Hepburn have raised their concerns about the plans.

Mr McClymont said: “I have serious concerns regarding the proposals to relocate Kilsyth’s delivery office to either Cumbernauld or Kirkintilloch. Local people will understandably be worried about losing a vital local service and staff are facing uncertainty in terms of their future.‘‘

Meanwhile, Mr Hepburn has written to Moya Greene, chief executive of Royal Mail Ltd, stating that the potential closure would be a great inconvenience to local residents in Kilsyth if it was to be relocated to either Cumbernauld or Kirkintilloch. He said: “I completely appreciate why this proposal would be concerning to both employees and local residents, not least due to the cost implications for both parties when travelling to other towns to either pick up parcels or go to work.”

Kilsyth Councillor Jean Jones also confirmed she will be meeting up with MP Gregg McClymont to discuss the issue further.
