Councillor hits out at North Lanarkshire Council and Labour Party in bullying row

The Labour councillor who twice has tried to become MP for Motherwell and Wishaw has spectacularly fallen out with the party she fought for - at both grassroots and national level.

Angela Feeney who was defeated by Scottish Nationalist Marion Fellows in both 2017 and last December has even likened being in the party to being in “an abusive relationship,”

Ms Feeney whose council ward is in Wishaw also claimed that she had been bullied by former Labour colleagues for three years.

She left the party after refusing to vote with fellow councillors over the budget earlier this year.

However the row took on new momentum when Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer fired left-winger Rebecca Long-Bailey last month.

Ms Feeney said: “People are saying if I leave, where will I go?It sounded like they are in an abusive relationship.”

She also took exception to the fact that Labour opposes a second independence referendum - and wondered how this could be explained to voters on the doorsteps.

The Labour Party headquarters in Glasgow refused to comment on the row.

However, a Labour Group Spokesperson at NLC said: “These claims are not new, have been investigated and found to be without basis.

“It is disappointing that after being defeated in the General Election that Angela has chosen to resign from the party and spread malicious and unsubstantiated accusations against her former colleagues.

“Nevertheless, we wish Angela well as an independent member.”
