Greens respond to lighting Queens Park

An online petition started by local resident Chris Pech has now attracted more than 5,500 signatures.

Southside Central candidate Cass MacGregor said: “On the campaign trail, the issue of lighting in Queens Park has been raised on the doorstep by local residents.

This has been discussed largely in relation to safety concerns, but also on practical grounds with dog walkers and cyclists wishing to use the park after dark.

“With Queens Park’s management plan now out of date having expired last year, we feel that the issues of lighting, safety and access routes should be considered as part of a consultation process on the renewal of the plan.From looking into this issue, it is clear that installing lights alone in Queens Park is unlikely to be a quick fix for safety concerns.

“At this point, there is not high enough footfall after dark and a lot of different routes are lined by trees and shrubs.

“However, it may be possible to light certain key routes and promote the use of these, possibly in coordination with community safety teams and other park user groups.”

Local democracy spokesman and candidate for Pollokshields, Jon Molyneux added: “It’s clear that local people feel the issue of lighting the park deserves proper investigation and renewing the management plan is an obvious opportunity to do that.

“The only way Queen’s Park can meet its full potential is for the council to work together with the local community.Unfortunately, without a clear community-led plan going forward, the park risks slipping into neglect through under investment”

Council candidate for Langside, Tanya Wisely added:“Residents have also raised issues around play areas, road crossings and entry points to improve access for pedestrians and wheelchair users, as well as the wish to boost biodiversity and support wildlife in the park.

“There are great opportunities too for a more joined up approach to encourage cycling and walking, including linking with the new South City Way and Victoria Infirmary redevelopment.

“We need to make the most of this much loved Southside resource.”
