MPs have say on holiday quarantine row

The rules which have left a host of foreign holidays hanging in the balance have been discussed by MPs who have said they support them for safety’s sake.

Passengers who disembark from aircraft in the UK must now self-isolate for a fortnight unless they have returned from Ireland or the Channel Islands.

And that’s a move termed “essential” by Motherwell and Wishaw MP Marion Fellows.

She added: “This is just one of the many steps that should be taken to reduce transmission, protect our NHS, and save lives.

“The UK Government’s proposed public health protections at UK borders have come far too late. It is deeply concerning that it has taken until now for measures to be put in place – despite SNP MPs having called for them since the beginning of lockdown.

“That thousands of people have been allowed to enter the UK for so long during a global pandemic without the appropriate checks and measures in place is dangerous.”

Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill MP Steven Bonnar agrees.

He said “I understand this is a difficult time for travellers particularly those expecting to be going on holiday However, we must remember that the Covid-19 remains a global pandemic and therefore our priority first and foremost should be to protect lives.

“The UK Government has taken a shamefully lax approach to public health protections, with irresponsible delays in quarantine measures and medical screening in our airports.”

Both MPs have opted not to travel to Westminster and and participate in Parliamentary sessions through Zoom-style video conferencing from their own homes.
