Scheme backs efforts of local youngsters

A group of inspirational young people from throughout the Times & Speaker circulation area have been rewarded by the Lanarkshire Educational Trust Scheme.

A team heading to Malawi to volunteer as part of an aid mission by the Healthy Lifestyle Project this summer

have each received £1,000.

The group consists of - Aimee Gowrie, Motherwell, and Graeme Lindsay, Rebecca Lovell, Ross McAlpine and Jennifer Phillips, all from Bellshill.

Motherwell badminton player Alex Dunn has been given a grant of £1,000 to help him compete for Scotland in the European Junior Championships, while Taekwondo expert Emma McKee from Uddingston has also received a funding award of £500 to compete in the European Championships.

And Scott Murphy, from Motherwell, has received £800 to take part in a high school exchange programme in America.

Presenting the awards, Councillor Tommy Morgan said: “These grant recognise academic and sporting achievement.

“The money will help these young people develop their talents and boost their future career prospects.”
