Tory councillor in Bearsden calls on people to #moveon over Dominic Cummings

A Conservative councillor in Bearsden has tweeted her support for people to #moveon over Dominic Cummings.

Sheila Mechan, East Dunbartonshire Council councillor for Bearsden North ward posted on Twitter on Wednesday night: “Hate to embarrass anyone but I wonder how many of the people issuing grandstanding statements and passing judgement have actually READ the rules. #moveon”.

There has been a furore over Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s chief adviser Dominic Cummings driving 260 miles from his home in London to another home in Durham during lockdown in March and then 30 miles with his family to and from Barnard Castle to supposedly test his eyesight before travelling back to London.

Police said yesterday (Thursday) he might have broken coronavirus lockdown rules through the second trip.

Durham Constabulary said it would not take any further action against Mr Cummings.

An investigation concluded that the journey on Easter Sunday would have warranted police intervention as a potential breach of the Health Protection Regulations, which enforce the lockdown.

However, police found that Mr Cummings did not break the law with his earlier 260-mile journey from London to his parents’ farm in County Durham.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said people should move on from the incident and has refused to sack Mr Cummings, despite calls for the latter to consider his position by dozens of backbench Tory MPs.
