Pollokshaws Community Hub now open

Pollokshaws has a new hangout, following the official opening of a community hub.

Pollokshaws Area Network has leased the derelict building — attached to its community garden, opened on Shawbridge Street in January 2013 — from Glasgow City Council, and is now transforming it into a public space for exercise, classes and workshops.

Some 60 people headed along to the opening on Friday, with Glasgow South MP Stewart McDonald cutting the ribbon and declaring the new facility open.

Fiona Ferguson, co-ordinator of the Pollokshaws Area Network, told The Extra: “We’re now open for business.

“We’ll have drop ins three mornings a week — Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10am-noon - and people can come along, have a cup of tea and find out what’s on in the area, and what they would like for the hub.

“We have free wifi and use of computers — a first for the area — and we also have the Singing for Health community choir in Mondays 1.30-2.30pm, and easy exercise on Tuesdays 10.30-11.30am and Thursdays 2.30-3.30pm.

“We’ll soon have lots of classes and workshops, some of which will be run in partnershipo with Glasgow Clyde College, and we’ll also hopefully have welfare rights and money advice.”

Stewart McDonald MP added: “The new community hub and garden facility in Pollokshaws is a welcome addition to a proud and historic community.

“It’s fair to say that Pollokshaws has seen a decrease in community facilities over the past 10 years, so to see this new one pop up is great news and is testament to the hard work of local people who have put in a lot of work in turning this idea in to a reality. It has my full support and best wishes for the future.”

Community garden sessions will continue to run Friday 10am-4pm — and, as reported in The Extra, the place was given a spruce up earlier this year by kids from St Conval’s and Tinto primaries and Shaw Mohr Early Years Centre.

Artwork created by the creative kids continues to decorate the community hub.
