Proposals to extend Abronhill could re-draw map of Cumbernauld

Ambitious plans to create a major development on the fringes of Abronhill will finally be made public at a drop-in event tomorrow (Thursday)

Locals are being invited to attend a consultation event for the so-called South Cumbernauld Community Growth Area at Abronhill Community Centre between 1pm and 6.30pm.

The event has been organised by North Lanarkshire Council.

The blueprint, which is only a consultation document at this stage, aims to illustrate how the town’s existing housing needs could potentially be met in a huge stretch of land at Forest Road.

This is the first public airing of the plan, which has been the subject of longterm discussion in Abronhill and beyond.

And it will be the first development on Cumbernauld’s ‘satellite’ for decades.

A project spokesperson said: “The design aims for an attractive environment with high quality landscape, native woodland and greenspace. New residential layouts are designed to encourage walking, cycling and public transport use.

“The type and sizes of new houses have not been finalised although it is hoped to build in six phases providing a maximum of 766 new homes.’’
