Mr Smith won applause during an emergency debate at the European Parliament in June when he said he was “proudly Scottish and “proudly European”.

The MEP is now currently at the forefront of the SNP’s battle to maintain Scotland’s interests within the European Union.

He said: “I am looking forward to coming back to Kirkintilloch to give some insight into Scotland’s position in Europe and explain the effects of a ‘Hard Brexit’ resulting in Scotland leaving the single market and Scots losing their current rights to live, work and study in Europe.

“All options are being considered to protect Scotland’s economy and safeguard our democratic rights. And, of course, Independence is one of these options.”
